Larijani: Regional Resistance Stems from U.S. and Israeli Policies
WANA (Jan 02) – Ali Larijani, advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, emphasized that Iran did not initiate the resistance movement but that it arose as a response to oppression by the U.S. and Israel in the region. He stated, “Resistance emerged due to regional circumstances, and Iran supported it. For instance, Hezbollah formed when Israeli occupation provoked anti-occupation movements in Lebanon.”
Larijani explained that in Syria, resistance arose during the spread of terrorist groups like ISIS, fueled by the U.S. and other nations’ actions. He noted that Iran’s fight against terrorism was a matter of national security, as extremist groups targeted Iran, Syria, Iraq, and even Russia. Despite differences with allies like Russia and Iraq, collaboration was rational due to shared security concerns.
He pointed out that coordinated efforts among Iran, Syria, Iraq, and Russia successfully curbed terrorism. “Joint action reduced costs and increased effectiveness,” he said. While nations involved had differing priorities, they united against a common threat.
Larijani also addressed criticisms of Iran’s role in Syria, stating that combating terrorism abroad prevented greater costs domestically. “If we had allowed terrorists to grow unchecked, they would have posed severe threats within Iran,” he asserted.
Regarding Syria’s future, Larijani stressed that stability depends on rational governance that ensures territorial integrity and equitable treatment of ethnic and religious groups. He added that the resistance remains strong across the region, including in Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen, thanks to the groundwork laid by figures like General Qassem Soleimani.
On Israel, Larijani dismissed claims of its dominance, highlighting ongoing resistance and challenges within Israel, such as economic struggles and public dissatisfaction. He noted that Hamas remains active despite Israeli attempts to dismantle it, underscoring the resilience of the resistance.
In conclusion, Larijani emphasized that regional stability hinges on inclusive governance and resisting external domination, particularly from Israel and the U.S. He reiterated that Iran’s actions in Syria were primarily focused on combating terrorism and preserving regional security.
